Any number "x 9" will equal digits that will add to nine. It's an old multiplication rule to help kiddies learn/remember. The other stuff is just there to throw you off, and make it less obvious.

Oh, and when you simplify it, you get 3x3 which is 9... in case you didn't make the connection.


I had an algebra teacher that liked to use riddles like that as examply for simplifying equations.
