Gotcha... I was not sure how your home is set up. In my situation, It would be much more effective than any handgun, as there is a long hallway to the stairs from the Master bedroom, so to wait for someone to come up the stairs and spray them with Buck, then STOP them with a slug is optimum.
Also, shotty size is why I suggested, cut down, and pistol grip for maneuverability. We train to do small quarters with long guns... from shotguns, to mini14s, to our ARs and our Storms, so its definitely doable.
If your still not digging the idea, get out to a range that rents guns and put some rounds through it. I would go with a full size if it is going to be a night stand gun, no need for a compact of any sort. Larger frame... better accuracy with a longer barel, as well as the opportunity for higher cap mags (not sure what NJ allows).

FYI, my current night stand gun is a full size glock 17 with a TLRII rail mounted.
It was the first gun I ever shot, and I LOVE IT!

Yea I hear you on being able to do it with a long gun. Just don't want to get another shotty when I have three in the box already
I will look into a full size glock instead of the sub compact variants.Correlation does not imply causation.

If you are getting a range/house hand gun get something fun. G20 or g21. The .45 has less snap running factory ammo than the short and weak aka sw.40.
The ONLY problem with glocks in .40 is in the earlier chambers. g3.5 and earlier have an "unsupported chamber". This is where are the folly of kabooms come from.
If you've ever seen police fired .40 brass at the range(easy palce to see it first hand) you can see the " buldge"
For me I chose the later design barrel for reloading and case life. Or run a wolf or other brand barrel.

Im a 9mm guy with my glock... I know people think its less stopping power, but I dont really think the stopping power is that big of a difference between the 9mm and the .40.

9mm or .40cal is cheaper than .45 too no?
Stopping power is a huge debate that will never get a concrete answer, but, 3.5 00 close range will prob win
