Default Found out something nice today......

The $200 CyberPower UPS that I bought works like a champ. I have the Computer, external RAID box, TV/Monitor, and Cable box all hooked to the backup section, and the storm today knocked the power out and I hadn't a clue (was outside on the porch) it had happened until I noticed the alarm clock flashing. Computer didn't skip a beat. Good stuff! No more reloading windows due to sudden shutdowns for me!

I got this one: http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-CP1.../dp/B00429N19W It's enough to run everything I have hooked up for 15 minutes on battery. Granted with the computer not churning away at encoding a blu ray I'm only pulling 405 watts TOTAL between all four items, lol.

I wasn't intent on spending that much, but I nearly found out the hard way about needing a pure sine wave UPS for an Active PFC power supply like my OCZ ZX850 is. So I went to the high end of the low end UPS's there.

That's a nice looking UPS system. I inherited an old APC UPS from a buddy of mine for free, but I question how well it's working. Actually it seems to work *too* much... it's always giving into overvoltage or undervoltage alarms but yet our utility power at least seems stable. Haven't had a power outage yet, but I needed the safety assurance for my 6TB drive arrays.

If you really want to talk inner geek - I have a program I use, SickBeard, which I add all my favorite TV shows to. SickBeard downloads the TV show information from theTVDB.com, including schedules, and then waits for one of the shows to air. Once it airs, it goes out to NZB index websites and searches those sites for new copies of the show that just aired. When it finds a match, it copies the results over to a second program, SABnzbd, which then downloads the TV show from Usenet newsgroups. SABnzbd downloads the TV show, moves it to the proper TV show and season folder, then pings Sickbeard that it downloaded successfully. Sickbeard then automatically sends me an e-mail that the show is ready to watch, and updates a third program called xBMC. xBMC is the front end for watching videos - movies or TV shows alike. I have a 30' HDMI cable running from my MediaPC in my computer room, through the wall to my 40" LCD in the living room so the TV just thinks it's a second monitor. With xBMC on the PC's second screen (the TV), I can then use my mini wireless keyboard and touchpad to select the TV show and watch it.

    Now that's geek.

(PS: Good example of how well it works - Breaking Bad Season 5 Episode 4 aired last night, one hour long episode, at 10pm EDT. I had an e-mail at 11:44pm EDT saying the show is ready for viewing in xBMC )
