Tender? Doubtful, I have some self induced deep scars on my hand and you actually feel less in those spots. Scars have no nerve endings in them. I have reopened the same scars about 3 times and each further time I felt it less and less.
I'm far from an expert on scarification, I just know the basics and know that fortunately it is such an extreme that not many people do it for the "cool" factor that I mentioned earlier.
Yea when I found that phoenix I thought it looked gorgeous, but remember that is still the fresh, open wound after it stopped bleeding, the skin still needs to heal over it and form a scar... basically that stage you're seeing the exposed blood vessels and such.

Oh absolutely, but it's another one of those things, like tattoos and piercings, that the pain depends on where it is done. The back... not too bad... the side like that phoenix... I bet it caused some serious pain. You're basically stripping away to the last layer(s) of skin that are so thin/porous that the blood seeps through.
