Tractor fluid in a transmission
The torque converter on my car is pretty loose and talking with a couple Old Timers at the racetrack and parts store some of them recommended that I actually replace all of my transmission fluid with tractor hydraulic fluid to help tighten up the torque converter anybody ever heard of doing this?
Maybe Frank Cahall could chime in?

Yah Ive heard of it. You can do some searching using Hy-gaard, thats the john deere brand, but apparently its pretty common. The hydraulic fluid is normally clear though, so most people mix it with a little trans fluid so you can actually see it on the stick.
I believe there are two viscosities, I think the heavier one can generally tighten up a converter.
Its what Im putting in the race car, when I put the shift kit in.1997 Z28 M6: My cam and my A/C don't get along.

Really depends on how much you expect to gain, but it will tighten things for sure.
Go on the bullet and do some readingCorrelation does not imply causation.

That's interesting. Other than a tighter converter, any pro's & con's when doing this fluid swap?

I've Been Told that it will also lower my transmission temperatures a little bit because the torque converter won't be stalling so fast in the low RPM range below the stall speed

Does it hurt the pump or seals or anything like that?

I wouldn't think so but Frank Cahall would be the expert on this subject matter

I have a bracket race dragster with a powerglide. Runs 4.90-5.00 in eighth mile. In my dragster, tractor fluid made it slightly tighter on the graph but it also ran a lot warmer. did not like it and do not use it anymore. It it very popular with the ultra high horsepower turbo guys. Type f in my powerglide and Mercron Dextron 3 in my 4l60e for me.

I use Dex 3 in my 4L60E, also. I recall asking Frank about any fluid recommendations and he said "Dex 3. How much you want to spend is up to you".
