opti or battery problem??
Got my engine and car back together and all seems good. At the moment I just have a PCM4less tune until I can get it dyno tuned this spring. We are moving so I go to move the car to my in laws for a few months and have a problem. I start the car, let it idle and warm up, drive about 10 miles or so in city driving and all seems good. I stop to pickup some food and notice when I restarted the car, it barely cranked and fired, so I figure the battery is weak. I pull out of the restaurant onto the main drag when I hear a "pop/backfire" sound and the car idles up to about 1500 then down to about 7-800 and then dies. I try to restart but battery is too low and it cranks maybe twice then nothing. I roll it into the parking lot (police assisted....
) and leave it. I take the battery home, charge it over night and the next morning I put it in and it fires up first try. My initial thought is opti is going out. I have had the opti go out before and the symptoms were different, but I also had a good charge in the battery and could refire it, but it would die immediately until it cooled down then it would run fine until it got hot. So this time my first thought after the battery charge is that the opti is bad again. I have the 93-95 style opti, but mine IS vented. I have since started it in the driveway and let it idle until its warm enough that both fans are on and cooling the coolant. I then took it about a mile down the road and back...stopped and did a little burnout and then let it idle back at the house and it never shut off. Could my problem have been just a low voltage battery? I'm kind of afraid to drive it any distance in fear of it randomly shutting off. Any insight would be awesome...sorry for the long read!

Yes it could. I would look for the reason the battery went dead first. Might be a shorted alternator.

starter could be going, alternator not charging right or battery going south.
Your car stumble, backfire, no start, start and die....yeah that "can" be Opti or coil or ICM.96 BBB 383/T56

Has a new ICM and coil tested good. I'm gonna get the alternator off this week and get it checked. Starter is an old mini starter but seems fine.
