Laptop for TunerPro

What do you guys recommend for a new, cheap laptop to use only for tuning? I'm going to be using TunerPro RT. I can't keep up with all the 32bit, XP, Vista, Windows 49 jargon anymore

I would look for a good used computer windows 7 & down you can install software using any version of Windows. If you are going to use a serial to USB adapter make sure to purchase one that forks with the software. Usally the manufacturer of the tuning software can assist you with wear to purchase. Moats seams to make a cable that is universal.

The cable is not compatible there is a possibility to ruin you pcm.

I am using hptuners for my 24x but i ordered a cheap used one on cowboom.com. if you check slickdeals.net they usually have coupons and whatnot for that site. i got an asus 15 inch touchscreen laptop with windows 8 for 270. It works well and is fast enough to run all of my programs well. The only thing is you need to check the condition on the laptop you order and make sure it is at least satisfactory.

+1 for Slickdeals for new. I would go to NewEgg.com and scan the refurbs. I picked up a nice unit about two years ago and swapped in an SSD for under $500.

I would also recommend the SSD swap. makes the computer run so much smoother that you will never want to go back.

You really don't need anything complex to run Tunerpro. I did all stock pcm tuning with an old asus netbook.

I still run an old IBM T30 because it is one of the few laptops with the old serial and parallel ports, as well as USB. But I've been doing tuning for a long time now and I don't want to replace my older serial and parallel equipment that still works. If all you need is USB any cheap laptop should work, although some software doesn't seem to play well with WIN7 or newer WIN OS. I don't use Tunerpro so I don't know if it has any WIN7+ issues or not.

And I definitely agree with the SSD. I put one in my T30 even though it really doesn't help much on the old, slow IDE interface. But since its solid state I don't have to worry about replacing the drive due to the arm banging on the platter of an HDD while driving. I seemed to go through HDDs quite a bit on my tuning laptops due to the constant use and abuse.

IBM T30 here as well. 2 MHZ processor, 2 gigs of ram. About the fastest old computer you can get with a serial port. Built well. Mine just so happens to have been "upgraded" to windows 7, so I can attest that tunerpro and all other lt1 programs I've tried work with it.

They make nice USB to Serial adapters now that come with drivers and everything. I used to throw T30's in the trash at work haha. But hey, whatever gets the job done. If I had to look for a dedicated tuning laptop, it'd be be lightweight, small to moderate screen (13.3"-15.6"), minimum 4GB RAM, CPU speed doesn't really matter, but the faster and more cores available do, Win7, 8, or 10 (don't be afraid of 8, you can install ClassicShell to get rid of that stupid start screen), and also all dongles needed to support the interfaces of the tuning apparatus/software. But, I'm also an IT guy and purist when it comes to things like this.

Another possibility is to run a VM that has an older OS to support the legacy apps. (like XP Mode in Win 7) The only hard part would be emulating the interfaces, but anything is possible.

There are a number of well rounded IT guys here. We can find you something lol. Craigslist has some gems from time to time, as well.
