I'm sure she knew someone was there, but had no idea of anything else. She has to maintain connection with the one she is interviewing to keep them talking and not directing attention away from the interview if she sees the reporter's eyes wandering elsewhere. When interviewing the reporter's attention should always be focused. Combine that with her always being used to people being around during an interview and this kind of shit can happen.
My wife is on location with a company right now who fired their director of operations. The guy came in and showed them where to access certain files, has refused a severance package and did not clean out his office.
