LT1 alternator interchangeability
Should an alternator from a '95 T/A be a direct swap for a '94 Z28? I already bought one and tried to fit it in my Camaro. The hot wire and connector were in different positions compared with my original. Now I'm just wondering if it was truly out of a '95 T/A as advertised. I couldn't tell from the pictures that it was different so now I don't know if I can return it. On top of that it chirps like a bearing is going bad.
It's always something.
Thanks,

They both call for the same part # ACDelco 335-1050 you may just need to reclock it to have the correct alignment between the mounting holes and electrical connections.
Having to clock an alternator is not uncommon, however if it was used and supposed to have come off of a Trans Am I would be leery since it should have already been clocked
correctly since all mechanicals between a Camaro and Firebird are identical. Maybe they disassembled for some reason who knows.

Ive found subtle differences in posts and cases. Ie: the alt from my 95 ta was different than the one on my friends 94 camaro... i gave it to him... he made it work, but there were differences.

"Clocking" - that was the term I was looking for. Yes, I believe it was 180 degree out of position. I thought about switching it to the "correct" configuration but thought I would ask about it here - sure enough I got the answers I was looking for. The only other thing of note was the size of the hot wire mounting screw and nut - the nut was 3/8" vs my 1/2" or 9/16" nut. I made it work but I also ended up slicing the wire bundle to get enough length to reach the plug-in connector.
Thanks guys!

Well, I'm not sure how to check the amperage but I did manage to "reclock" it 180 degrees - fits a lot better but still concerned about the smaller hot wire screw and nut. Didn't notice anything on the ammeter - I don't remember what the needle was reading when driving with the old alternator - seems to charge fine so far. I may look into having mine rebuilt, put it back in and save this TA alternator as a backup.
Hope you all had a good weekend!
