    Default rusty cylinder walls...

just as it says, I got the engine out of the Camaro over the weekend. After we pulled it I noticed that the passenger side cylinder walls had some light surface rust on them (drivers side is still clean and shiny). I was told to spray it down with penetrating oil and try to wipe it off... what do you guys think of this idea? If using that method is ok, the only cylinder I'm really worried about would be #8, its a little worse then the others.

If it is just light surface rust I'm sure you could just knock it off without an issue as long as it hasn't done any pitting. Trying to wipe it down with a solvent of some sort shouldn't hurt it. A ball hone on a drill might be pretty helpful too.

alright, i was looking around in the shop and seen a cylinder wall honing tool but it needs some parts before I could use it.

Do you have a 2x4 and some 300 grit sandpaper?

I have used the new rust remover they have a some that can be purchased at walmart for 15 dollars. Or you can do what Tubby Formy said I have used 1,000 to 1,500 grit wet-dry and 2-4.

I would use transmission fluid or Marvel mystery oil to clean it.

I'm sure I can find some if the rag doesn't take it off. Thank you guys for the ideas!

IMO If it wasnt too bad Id wipe it down and try to remove as much as I could chemically, If it does not have any noticable high spots them roll with it. Id be very care full if you use a hone, Light honing isnt bad but if you get carried away with it it could cause taper in the cylinder.

yea i got it off with some 500 grit sand paper, went around it twice then sprayed it with wd-40 again and took a rag to it to clean it up... went pretty easy, no pitting and the crosshatching still looks pretty damn good. I think its time to finish cleaning it up and get the cam in it and heads on and let it rip
