Cast vs billet cam

Where is the line drawn with open spring pressure on a cast vs billet core?

Comp, Lunati and Bullet all say that "once you cross 450 lbs open pressure you need a BILLET cam".

Some might get by with more and some might have probelms with less so I consider 420 lbs open pressure the point of where you NEED a billet cam.

Anything less and a cast cam is fine.

If you do get a billet cam, pay a lil extra and get a cast/everwear gear pressed on instead of a billet cam and billet gear.

I sell LT1 billet cams with everwear gear for $375 shipped compared to a cast cam for $300 shipped.

some people might have problems with a cast cam at a lower spring pressure but if so, they probably had some valve tranbe problems happening like valve float, lifter jumping off the lobe, re used old pitted up lifters that can take out the cam, springs coil binding or not enough pressure, etc, etc.

I do not think I had an issue with the cast cam I had, but every valvetrain tech and my machine shop guys have said with my open pressure a billet cam is a good insurance to get.

At the same time however, I do not want to be spending a lot of money to make myself feel "safer" if there is no reason to.

what kinda seat and open pressure are you using?

What are the cam specs and what cam company and lobe catagory are they from?

From you via an email, "The Comp 977 springs that you have will have 420 lbs open pressure @ .600 lift and with a .565 lift cam it will see 390-400 lbs open pressure."

Not sure what they are set up height wise.

if set up at 1.850" thiose #'s are correct.

If they are set up higher/lower than it will be different.
