My Interesting Night
This is how my night went last night. Sorry for the blurry ass photo but it was kinda rough.

We were sent out last night into the Delaware Bay for overdue vessel from our local port at around 10:30. We searched for over 5 hours in the pitch black. Literally flying blind most of the time and running by the radar and plotter. Whats in the picture is what I could see. Due to the large area we had USCG and State Police Heli's flying over head and 9 SAR (Search And Rescue) boats operating in almost 1000 sq. miles of water. Unfortunately, another Fire department's boat was lost during the search from striking a jetty at full speed. All 3 of the crew were pulled from the boat before it sank but had some serious injuries.
Here's the news article: http://www.delawareonline.com/story/...jured/9947801/
We called the search at around 3:30am with not much hope and agreed to meet back at the dock at 7:00 to resume the search. The weather was perfect and the water was like glass so we were able to cover a lot of ground quickly. We received a radio report from a State Police heli that he had the boat in sight and the single occupant was OK. He was almost 30 miles north of us when we got the message. We set a course and made really good time, even got to do some freighter wake jumping on the way. The big twin boats are nice but the little Boston Whaler is the sports car of the 2.
Here he is under tow by our sister stations boat with our fire boat in the back round. Thats @99zrinehart in the pic.

I very rarely share things from calls but this had a good ending. It was kinda nice when we got him back to the dock and his 2 y/o daughter was sitting on the dock waiting for him. She was ecstatic to see him..the wife not so much. Still unfortunate a fellow fire co had a accident and emergency of their own. The operator of that boat was my Realtor when I bought my house so it hit close to home.Last edited by Sahara54; 06-04-2014 at 08:06 PM.
