    Default Headlight works sometimes

I went out to the car in the garage and turned the headlights on and they both poped up and when I turned them off only the passenger side went down. The car was not running at this time.

I then got the keys and turned the lights on so the passenger side would pop up and then I started the car and went for a little drive (about 4 miles) with the lights up, then I turned them off and they both went down.

    Whats going on?

I'm hearing from other web sites that it might be the STOP tabs are bent.

Could be the first signs of worn a worn gear.

Note #5, under "Common Headlight Failures"..... addresses the stop tab issues as well, and suggests a fix.

Two possibilities if the symptom always occurs in the same position and side: First, like Brent says, the problem is that the mechanism is getting jammed (or binding). The controller sees that the motor hasn't started turning right away and removes the power to it, assuming it is already in position. The jamming/binding can occur for many reasons (including a worn gear) but the thing I did to fix mine was to tighten the metal tabs on the motor that hold it to the plastic gear housing. You want to stop it from wobbling on it's mount since that misaligns the gears. The 2nd possibility is that the relay "down" contacts for the motor current for that side is making a poor contact due to wear. That requires replacement of the control module.

1998 Trans Am - LS1/A4 - all stock and almost all original - one owner - driven daily.
