Oh ok I see what you mean, I thought you merely meant the power of the gun as the reason. Luckily I'm in the clear, but never really thought about that side of it.

Well, yeah I mean for recoil purposes too for your kids and wife, but it would still be an effective way to get rid of an intruder.

We keep a 870 tactical for my wife to use for home defense. Because all she has to do is point down the hallway. And anyone in front of her will be hit. lol I got 19 and S&W .45 for home defense. But im way more comfortable with a pistol.

I have a couple of shotguns but they are hunting firearms and in no way tactical. Long barrels are not good for clearing corners etc.

For now I keep my old youth 20# in the ready status and have some light(er) load outs for it, small enough to move around with but still bulky compared to a nice pistol.

A hollow point 9mm isn't going that far if you miss target

I am definitely late to this thread however, I am a genuine GLOCK owner. I do like the 1911 COLT which was my 3rd actual duty weapon. My current longtime duty and carry gun is a GLOCK 32 .357SIG which I enjoy knowing in just a few moments I can convert my 32 to a 23 or even a 19 using the appropriate barrel. The only part is I have to have 2 different magazines available. I can use the .357 mag for the .40 but the 9mm has it's own due to the smaller casing size. 3 calibers 1 gun same feeling in the hand for muscle memory

I was trying to choose between the .357sig and the 9mm, honestly I just didn't know a lot about the .357 and have never shot one. Found a good deal on the 19 so my choice was made. How does the .357sig round compare?

Rack a pump gun and see how fast someone moves. Announce your intentions and cycle the slide and you'll most likely never fire a shot.

.357 sig will have more stopping power.

The SIG is a very HIGH velocity round of course it is a little more expensive but I feel it is well worth the extra $ for ammo. Generally speaking GOLD DOT duty ammo is 1325 feet per second, that is absolutely amazing. The sheer velocity is what makes it punch through car doors, windshields etc. I have personally tested this.
Using the G32 You will NOT have to make an adjustment with your sight picture NOW if you are loaded with .40 you MUST make a slight adjustment in your sight picture since the .40 (projectile) is a little bit larger and travels slower 850-925 ft per second.
Best advice I could give would be to rent a G32 and put some rounds through it then try out a few others that you are comfortable with.

Lastly, if you only want a 9mm G19 or G17 the newest 9mm duty / self defense ammo in P+P is some excellent ammo and is roughly 50-75 ft per second slower than the .357

Every single article I have read has clearly stated that racking a pump shotty is a dumb move. It identifies where you are and more importantly, who pumps an empty gun?

Shotguns are also notoriously overhyped on their ability to be able to "point and shoot".. heavy load will take a decently aimed shot, and a slug will go through people/walls/cars etc. That leaves you with light bird shot, which, hopefully deters most but...that 1% of times, and some tweaked out meth head.. well, may take more than light shot.

    /derail achieved.
