Thread: Open headers vs. Y, h, x
-

I ran open y pipe off my headers for a day and just driving 13 miles to work was super annoying. Especially at 5am. I'm all for noise but when it resonates and rattle your chest and head it's not awesome for long. I now have a Magnaflow hooked up to the ORY. To me it's perfect. It's still pretty loud but sounds good. I can't imagine an exhaust shop would charge more than 100 bucks to fit your exhaust to your y pipe.

Drive around at night and you'll feel like a giant asshole. I hate driving my car in the quiet hours and I have a full exhaust. Open headers is a new level of dick.

I am running 2.5 in true-dual no cats on mine to magnaflow mufflers(I dont remember what kind I installed them back in 2008). It was great when I had just bolt ons. Now that I built the 383 I kinda regret cutting off the cat and not running a X pipe.

I run dual 3" dumps that come off in the Y-pipe just after the header connection. Opened at the track, it usually takes 3 passes before the PCM syncs up. But once it does, it's easily 3mph at the 1/8th mile trap.
The first thing ya notice is that the engine flies through the gears much faster than with the dumps closed. Well thats the second thing… the first thing is that it sounds AWESOME!
LOL! I can't tell ya how many straights at the track refer to it as a 'race-car', because of it. Leaving some to refuse to stage up. So it's either that she's so loud or they just don't want their buddies seeing them get their ass beat by a three tone, 16 year old Camaro with the largest spoiler ever made to slap on an F-body.
It's hard to say…

Id say by the time you spend 250 bucks on a true dual setup you could just have a muffler shop match your current catback with your ory for less than half that?? I would never run straight headers on a daily driven car ever. Most likely will be running very rich.

well yeah after running it for about 2 weeks I can't drive it without earplugs. LOL. I think I am just going to swallow my ego and buy a pacesetter ory on jegs and probably a magnaflow catback as well. Most shops won't touch my car because it doesn't have cats. Its a dumb thing in Ca. I call a muffler shop and they ask me if the car has cats, I say no I just want a straight smooth y pipe, They say "Oh I'm sorry we can't do that..." So I really want to avoid shops and just use band clamps to install it myself.
I really wanted to make sure the merge and blah blah was the best it could be but I guess the pacesetter merge is going to have to do for now. I hear that even with a full catback and ory I only lose between 4hp-8hp so the y merge can't be THAT bad. I should have never cheaped out to begin with honestly. I am starting to regret even having painted headers lol. So after all this it seems ory+magnaflow is where I am going to end up for. If that ever bores me the only way I'll go is 3inch duals. But until then I should have a really nice sounding car. Loud, but not too loud and great tone. Won't turn heads but won't piss off neighbors. Good enough for now.
I almost wanted a tsp rumbler.... but I'll just wait to go for an x if I get bullets.
Any easy way to install ory+catback in the drive way? I'm assuming its a real PITA. Also which band clamps are the best and how many and I going to need?"I don't get it. I'm not exactly deaf and I've never given tire noise a second thought. So, I think the people that complain about them are: a) Suffering from hyperacusis b) Candy asses c) Still waiting to have their mufflers changed to the "real man" version" - HAHAHAHAHA quote from vmptuning on fordgt500.com

Helluva lot easier than putting on headers. Its actually one of the easier things you'll do.

If you wanna go cheap and loud why not just put a bullet right at the end of the ypipe and dump it there. Very easy to do.

My original Idea was actually to put a bullet off of each header collector and be done.
