Sooooooooo ......... you only need the additive, (it's really just a friction modifier), if you have a posi unit with "clutch packs" in it.

Hint: For those of you who may have upgraded to a "Torsen Type" LSD/posi, (like in the later model LS1 F-Bodies), you .... don't need the additive.

How would you describe the chatter? I didn't use the additive and I haven't noticed anything wrong with my rear end making any noise. Although I may have a 98+ rear end too... I can't remember. My car is such a frankenstein.

Gear oil should meet spec GL-5. Most of it does, but make sure.

Why would the 98 rear make a diff.. unless its a locker or spool it will still have clutch packs.

Go to a large parking lot, and pick up speed making a tight circle.. see if it complains....

If not, you may have been lucky enough to get the fluid that has the additive in it.... but I dont believe the year of the rear will make a diff man.

I thought the LS1's had the Auburn and SS had the Torsen diffs?

Popo8, nope, the "Torsen" style LSD differentials do NOT have clutch packs, and ........ GM started using them in the F-Bodies shortly after the introduction of the LS1

SS RRR, I thought(?) it was the other way around. I think the SS's got the auburn posi's, while the LS1 Z28's, Formula's and Trans Am's got the "Torson's"?

Thank you for this, I just read this and it clicked that this is probably why my car makes a funny whining/rubbing noise whenever I turn into the alley. Guess it's time for new diff fluid.

I know Royal Purple gear oil doesn't require the additive, wonder if the Castrol Syntech is the same way.
