my understanding of the noise is from the pitch of the gears.

The noise comes from the tiny little bits of air getting squished between the gears. A "noisy" gear drive has a tighter tolerance than a "quiet" gear drive. Thats why roots blowers make a similar noise. They also "squish" air between the helixes.

im not sure if i totally agree with that.
the M22 4spd was named the rock crusher because of the pitch of the gears, basically the straight cut. my M20 has gears on an angle, and its quieter.
i had a noisy gear drive in my 350. when you stick the noisy and quiet side by side, you can see the diff in the pitch of the gears.

the thing with the gear drive is yes it does robb HP but you mainly see these installed on roots style blower cars,no chain STRETCH to worry about under INSANE ROOTSBOOST!
they don't really car about the small loss in power to have accurate timing
