ATK shortblock, anybody heard of these guys?
http://high-performance-engines.com/...duct_Code=SP34
Seems like a pretty good deal on a shortblock for a near stock replacement. anyone deal with this company before or know anything about them?

It doesn't list one single part number or brand, so its hard to tell if its a good deal or not. I would stick to reputable shops that are up front about the parts they are using and have a history of success.
Also would be leery because of all the SBC geared info it states...9.x CR's using huge CC heads, dished pistons, and the pdf states to check PTV for 240 duration and up cams that should fit no problem on a stock LT1 shortblock.93 Medium Patriot Red Z28: Forged 383,GTP'd AFR 220s(@227ccs), LE .7xx" Billet SR,1.7 Shaftmounts,24x,Maxed Supervic,4150 TB. :12 Metallic Spark Black ZX14R: 1.5" drop, GP slipons, -2 Vortex rear. 152mph trap SWB, stock motor...now with Nitrous... :09 Victory Red LS3 Z51 Vette: Blackouts, muffler delete, sub. Purchased bone stock w/18k mi.

Yes, I used them in the past due to a friend referring me to them... My friend bought a Comp Eliminator car but had NO money to build a motor so he used ATK for a shortblock. He brought them ARP rod bolts and let them do all the assembly of the shortblock put his cam and heads that he had went to the track running 10.80s for years! I don't k.ow if they will do this still but they do good work.....

yeah it seems the more i read about them the more i like them as a stock replacement option. supposedly that 355 that i linked will handle up to 425hp.

Which is about 2/3rds of what a good 355 would handle using stock crank, rods and a good forged piston in the hands of the right builder.
425hp is nothing. That's maybe 350whp. If they are setting the bar that low when the stock shortblock readily handles 425hp+ that doesn't bode very well.
Just an observation.-Joe-

From what i know about that shortblock, I think they are stock rebuilds with the overbore being the only difference. I think it uses the stock reconditioned crank and rods. It sparked my interest because I was looking into getting my shortblock rebuilt and the average quote i got for a shop to build me a 355 using the stock crank and rods was around $2000. So the ATK seems like a really good option considering it would be the same build i was looking at plus I would have an extra shortblock to play around with after the swap. Also I think ATK gives you the option to upgrade things as well, so I might look into better rods cause I think the stockers would be the weak link there.

After looking around on the net I see that this company seems to have issues with resolving customer complaints, I do understand that engine re builders, mechanics ect make mistakes since they are afterall people. I had to replace an engine under warranty because the previous tech used an impact gun to prime the oiling system which broke the hell out of the pumps gears and eventually burned it up. I see that the price seems to be very low and that makes me wonder too because if your making money on the volume concept then there is really no incentive to deal with the 1 or 2 customers who run in to problems. Personally I would avoid them just based on what I have read so far because I have enough bumps on my head already and there are plenty of trustworthy speed shops around here.

I have an ATK stock reman engine in my car that I purchased used after my factory LT1 spun a rod. I can say that I have had no problems with the engine since I have installed it but I think it is down on power based on the dyno numbers and trap speeds at the track. It may just be that the old worn out engine was a little loose and ran a little better before it went. I plan on loosening this one up a little next year with a strict nitrous regimen and we will see if that brings it around.
As for the performance engine build, I would talk to a TRUSTED local machine shop and see what they can offer you based on you goals and budget.-David-
