Holset HX40 turbo...opinions
I have a 93 LT1 with a rear mounted Holset HX40. Have any of you or anyone you know ever ran one of these? I believe the turbo is way too big for the engine,or at least the exhaust housing is. My question is are the exhaust housings interchangable at all? I will be building a front mount set up this winter and i would like to use my current turbo unless its just worthless. Please chim in if you have any opinions, Thanks!

I am trying to do a front mount as well. I have the 6 blade version. Anyone know how well it will work? On a budget...

Cummins doesn't want to divulge efficiency maps so that info is tough to get that info. What I do know is that there are 6,7,8 blade inlets. 6 blade units are the largest, 67 mil inlet. Mine has a T3 base which worries me a bit. Mine came off of a Cummins 8.3L like most. I have both exhaust banks feeding a single turbo. These turbos can make 40+ psi. I have heard that these turbos run hot in a street car so I was planning to run methanol to cool the charge. On the turbo forum there is a guy who has 1 on a 5.0 mustang. He said his 6 blade comes on at about 3200 rpm like gang busters. So I was thinking on a 350 or 383 it should come on at some lower RPM like 2500-2800 rpm. I have a 38mm waste gate and an internal waste gate as well. I am guessing it ramps up fast as a diesel turbo is designed to ramp fast to come on at low rpm and pull a load as well as run in an engine that can take substantial boost.
So a turbine change may not be a bad idea to make it more car friendly.
Thoughts?

The T3 flange is what I'm concerned about. That's SMALL and could definitely pose an exhaust restriction. On a rear mount it might work good, but on a front mount, I think it would be a major restriction.
