Down in South Ga we have a place on a river waaaay out in the boondocks. There are these things called Helgamites that are fucking horrifying. Ill see if I can find a picture, it sounds about like your description POPO.

It was horrible, watching my life flash before my eyes. It landed on me, and started devouring my shirt. Nearly made it through my first layer of flesh before, my ninja like reflexes allowed me swat it away. It had so much girth, I literally sprained my wrist trying to get rid of it.....
