Alpine Subs

Well turns out my car has some pretty nice aftermarket speakers in the sails and doors and they sound great with the stock amp and my new Alpine Headunit. I just need more bass though. My highs and mids are fine. I listen to mainly country and rock. I am getting into rap and hip hop though but Sound Quality is definitly a priority over BOOM.

Im not wanting to spend a lot, maybe 150 at most. Im looking at either a 12 inch Alpine Type E in a sealed box or a 10" Alpine Type R. I know the Type R will be lightyears better but Ive heard good things about the accuracy and SQ of the Type E. I have a friend at Bestbuy that can get me the employee discount so I can get one there cheaper than online.

Do you guys have any other recommendations? Any of you guys using the Type R or Type E?

I am running type R 6.5" separates in my Impala. Sound awesome though my old school RockFord Fosgate amp. I had 2 type R 12"s as well. They were decently loud and clear. For Rock,Rap, Country etc the best all around sub would be a 12". (JL makes a 13.5" but its $$) Gets your moderately low lows in rap, and is still quick enough to keep up with the double kick in rock. Country doesn't seem to care lol.

Now do you have an amp to drive this sub? Best buy is in all honestly a joke. At least here in South Fl. Your best bet would be craigslist if on a $150 budget. You want to match the sub to the amp. Both in wattage and ohms. Your going to need a wiring kit, enclosure (AKA box, usually custom made to fit in a f body), sub, and an amp.

I have ran alot of subs in the years from being a teenager with sony xplod shit to Boston Acoustics rockford etc. That being said, my last car I just bought I picked up a single Apline Type-R off amazon for 140 bucks and this is the best sub I have ever had. It plays everything I want and I have to turn the bass down because it is overpowering if I don't. Don't think you are on my facebook but here is my actual status from yesterday "Waiting for my boss to show up, sitting in my car vibing to some Atreyu. Sub sounds awesome with these double peddle bass kicks" and turn on some rap you will think you are sitting on 15's especially in a fbody.

$150 is my budget for Sub only. My roomate has a nice sealed box Im going to use as soon as he gets his double box. Only reason Im going through bestbuy is I can get a deal without the shipping hassles of online buying. I really dont want to buy used as most guys around here are bassheads that pound the shit out of their stuff.

Im leaning towards the 12" now because Im really getting into hip-hop. If I go with the Type E, I can use my roomates old Rockford amp but the Type R will need more power.
Im gonna take my door panels off and get the numbers off of my components. They are some OLD looking Rockfords but sound very good. All my speakers sounded blown with the monsoon headunit but sound great with the Alpine CDE-121. The sail panel speakers also look old but have no brand marks on them. Im gonna pull them to get numbers.

Same place I bought mine from (hookedonelectronics), free shipping and they warped the box in a heavy plastic bag.

To gain maximum power, clarity, longevity you should match the sub to the amp. If the Sub has an RMS rating of 500 watts @ 2 ohms, you should look for an amp that will do 500-700 watts RMS @ 2 ohms. That way neither the sub or the amp is under powered. I like to run the subs on a little more power than rated because most amps these days are over rated in their power output. Its always better to over power then under power and have distortion. Distortion kills.

Ex:

Get your self a SWR-1243D. Has dual 4 ohm voice coils. Wire them in parallel and get down to 2 ohms.

Then get a JBL GTO7001 Mono block amp. It does 700 watts RMS @ 2 ohms.

Tune they stereo with a mathematical equation, 40-60hz -4dB test tone, and a mulitmeter set on AC volts.

Most any amp will work but this is one of the better ways to go about it.
