    Default Need Some Head Gaskets

    Hello! Before I get started, yes I did search first.

    Doing a cc503 swap with new valvetrain. I'm removing the heads to get the springs just right so I will need some new head gaskets.

    What do you all recommend? How about these? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-5716/

    This is for a stock bottom end LT1 with stock heads on my 1994 Trans Am. If it matters, I plan on running about a 125-150 shot of nitrous on occasion.

    Those will work fine. Give you somewhere around 11.1:1 compression. Still pump gas fine though. 92-93 a must though. If you think the heads may be warped or something I would go with the felpro's. I think they are the .039 thick ones. Part number should be 1074's.

    Forgot something measure the push rod length first because I would bet you will need different length ones.

    I didn't get PR's yet since I'm using LS7 lifters and figured the length would change. As for the heads, they shouldn't be warped at all.

    I already run 91-94 only so not a problem.

    No problem. I was just saying. I run the felpro's and I think they are giving me cooler temps. Why I have no idea. Cept they have bigger coolant holes. But alot run the mr.gaskets so I say you will be fine.

    Yes those are the ones and are the same one's I used in a recent swap on my son's 96 LT1.

    Best advice is to pay careful attention to installing the heads to help prevent any problem down the road. What I mean is follow ALL the recommended procedures such as: head bolt thread cleanliness, recommended sealant/lubricate, threads in block, torque sequence, cleanliness, etc.

    Attention to Detail is what I harp on so often but, sadly, too few actually do.

    x2, im running impy ss headgaskets though, they seemed like a good gasket minus they never put "this side up" o the gasket and i could figure out which side was up on the gasket

    I came out of that type of environment - military - but I've been retired since 1995. It's my son who's at West Point.

    I mention Attention to Detail so often because it pains me to read about guys doing all that work only to blow a head gasket, bend pushrods, etc., down the road because of something they missed.

    If the head gasket I'm using doesn't have any indication on which side goes up, I let the "O" ring around the bore opening tell me.

    I run my finger around both sides of the ring and identify the side where the ring is more slightly raised. That side goes to the cylinder head.

    Some head gaskets come with an instruction sheet with a diagram showing how to ID which side to go up AND/OR which end to go FORWARD. IIRC my 5716s came with a sheet like that. Funny thing is the sheet didn't apply to the 5716s but to two different head gaskets. So I resorted to the "feel the ring" method.

    Comparing all the holes is another way.
