Actually, I believe the concern is the additive package, not just a trace amount of zinc. Most merely refer to zinc, perhaps because it's easier to remember and spell. There are several other ingredients, in addition to zinc, that goes into the package.

From all I 've read, the oil companies re-formulated engine oil some years back due to emissions concerns and in so doing, eliminated/lowered the concentration of trace metals, like zinc.

This has resulted in an increased amount of flat tappet camshaft failures due to wear. Flat tappet cams/lifters require the higher concentrations found in earlier packages in order to survive. Most guys still running flat tappet cams/lifters now use oils like Rotella or Valvoline VR1 Racing oils which still contain the higher concentrations of earlier additive packages.

To your question: As far as I know, and from what I've read, roller cams/lifters do NOT require the higher concentrations of trace additives found in earlier engine oils. So if you're running a roller cam, NO, you don't need to add a zinc additive. In fact, my Owner's Manual specifically says NOT to use oil additives, just use oil that meets GM's oil specifications.

Well just a little more info.

My T&D shaft mounts came with instructions saying not to use the newer motor oils because of the reduced antiwear properties in the oil. It may not be needed, it could be hard on the catyltic converters, but it may make it run a little longer. If your just worried about cam break in your fine, without it.
