An old mechanics stethoscope helps locate knock sounds to determine with the engine running if the sound is from the block crank area or the Cylinder head and lifter valley. Spun rod bearing usually a deeper knocking sound. Ticking is usually cracked sparkplug or split wire exhaust leak etc. Vacume guage also helps to diagnose a steady tic could be a burned valve etc. Use a good flashlight inspect the cam lobes where the sounds location is perceived. If a bearing spun or rod knocking check the oil filter for metallic particles I put old large speaker magnets on mine to trap more debris in the filter.
