Default My Audi A6 Quattro -- This threads for you Larry!

Per Larry's request, here's a "build" or rather "Fix" thread for the 05 A6 3.2 Quattro I just picked up.

$3500 for the car. Outside is dirty as sin, it's been sitting for 2 months. Previous owner was a 19 year old kid who bought it locally from the Audi dealer with 170K miles in Feb. Needed out from under it, and the deal was done through his old man who was ensuring he'd get out from under the car. Kid knows nothing about the car, can't afford to pay the dealer $6k to fix, and was stuck. Amazingly, he's starting UTI in CA this coming Oct I believe.

Like I said, dirty. There's lots of little flaws in the paint, couple of small dings here and there, but nothing major. It'll shine up nicely. Wheels are 17" and plastidipped........silver underneath.

But this interior........no way it's a 178K mile interior by look:

Only interior flaw I can find is the drivers door panel, crack below and behind the arm rest, and it's dirty.

Car does NOT have navigation, but fortunately for me, I've already verified it's pre-wired. So for about $200 for the box and $40 for the DVD, I'll have functioning OEM navigation. Can also retrofit the AMI (Audi Music Interface) in place of the CD changer which allows direct Ipod/Phone/USB/SD Card connections for about $350-400.

Why so cheap? Car was making a HORRIBLE timing chain racket. Kid was smart and immediately shut down as it started the racket right when he started it. Called his dad, they had it towed to the dealership. Then had it towed home, and towed it by the road where I saw it. So I got it home yesterday, and got to work:

    Passenger side VC off:

Cams are aligned (look at the holes towards the left, they look to be in the same position:

Today I got the drivers VC off:

These cams look to be aligned too, and given their position, look to have the entire motor in time still.

Popped off the rear upper chain covers:

Only surprise I found so far was a bypass hose from airbox to intake tube missing, duct tape on intake tube hole. No biggie, no MAF.

At a stopping point now, have to order a $100 tool kit in order to lock cams and crank. Tensioners are going to run $150 for the right, $220 for the left. VC gaskets are $30. So we're talking like $500 for a fix. Can't complain there. Once fixed, probably have a sellable $7500-8000 car. Keep or sell, keep or sell.

    Updates coming.

That's not uncommon for an Audi interior to look good 150K miles later. Most of the owners take care of their car. My 02 had 130K and literally looked new inside. Ex wife took great care of her car. I'd say sell. They're costly to maintain after warranty is up even if you do the work. Let it be somebody else's headache. Nice write up so far.

Tools ordered very early this morning. Once they're in I'll lock the crank and cams and pop the cam phasers off and chain off and get the tensioners out. Then the big wait for money to order the tensioners.

That's where funds for this came from. I just don't want it to dip too low hence me not ordering everything at once.

I got used to having a pad in the bank. And with me training on the new position, OT isn't there, so I don't want to dip the pad too low in case I end up keeping the car.
