I was wondering if there is a gear drive timing setup for the LT1. If so who all make one. If you are running one, how do you like it?

all the above is true along with ROBBING HP,seen it on the dyno. i just had to have one in my 482 my builder removed it on the dyno and replaced it with a cloyes double roller and my baby gained 31hp,nice paper weight though!
hmm what style teeth did it have? (quiet, loud, etc...) i've never heard of them being that bad compared to a chain.
31HP?!?!?!? That seems like an extremely large amount! I've never heard of that.
But to the OP, I've always been told that it plays havoc on the ECM because of the vibrations and how loud they are. Plus they transfer a lot of harmonics between the cam and crank.
They sound cool. My dad ran one on his 73 Z for years (Pete Jackson Noisy) and had personal plated that said "NOBLOWR". People swore he had a 6-71 under the hood. I'm not sure of the performance gains, but he did switch to a double roller set up now.
I've also heard that even the gear drive suppliers will advise you not to use one on a computer controlled car. That would be good enough for me not to use one.
I love the sound too. I think it would be a nice "cool" factor is anything.
as far as im aware the only thing about being computer controlled is the knock sensor. otherwise it shouldn't make any difference.
I saw a test in Engine Masters mag where they went back to back with a timing chain, double roller, gear drive, and a belt drive. They were ALL WITHIN a tiny percentage of one another. There WAS NO CLEAR CUT WINNER.
Yes you can run a gear drive in an LT1 but you'll need an electric water pump.
Yes you will want to disable the knock sensor too.
Yes gear drives are good. They virtually NEVER wear out and stretch like a stocker type chain can.
i ran one in my 350 sonoma. it sounded neat. but they create a lot of vibration.
i actually had 2 of the 3 cam bolts fall out,and break the tabs off the cam bolt lock plate, and the cam buttom fell out.
i put a new button and plate on, lots and lots of lock tite, drove it some more, and sold it.
would i do it again.. maybe.

Well you can call BS all you want, the motor was built by Nickens Racing in houston,tx. back in 1988.
actually the design of a gear drive isnt what it thought it was. The rotating mass and friction of 4 gears is probably more than enough to make up the difference of two gears and a chain.
but still... I find 31hp hard to believe though, how much total HP was that engine making??

figured it had to be north of 500rwhp. sounds like a beast.
she was definately fun.......:metal:
i want to build another big block but turboed $$$$$$$ is NOT good as i am sure everyone can see...maybe before i die a will do it
i think the main pickup of that 31 hp could be a difference in the degree of the cam in relation to the crank...
My dads 406 has a gear drive. It sounds cool. He's never had issues with it and it has probably 25k miles on it at least. I don't remember it having any vibrations but I could see how it could screw with an EFI car for sure.
I looked at them at one point, the engine builder told me that the noise they make
is evidence of friction, which means a loss of power. I did not press for additional detail
I just pretty much assumed that the man knew what he was talking about.
Granted, that was almost 10 years ago. Maybe things have changed.
my understanding of the noise is from the pitch of the gears.

The noise comes from the tiny little bits of air getting squished between the gears. A "noisy" gear drive has a tighter tolerance than a "quiet" gear drive. Thats why roots blowers make a similar noise. They also "squish" air between the helixes.
im not sure if i totally agree with that.
the M22 4spd was named the rock crusher because of the pitch of the gears, basically the straight cut. my M20 has gears on an angle, and its quieter.
i had a noisy gear drive in my 350. when you stick the noisy and quiet side by side, you can see the diff in the pitch of the gears.

the thing with the gear drive is yes it does robb HP but you mainly see these installed on roots style blower cars,no chain STRETCH to worry about under INSANE ROOTSBOOST!
they don't really car about the small loss in power to have accurate timing
