I just bought my Formula on 11/23 and the previous owner put 87 octane, and there is still 3/4 of a tank.
Should I just run this, and put 93 when I fill up, or should I somehow drain this out and put 93 now?
Why the hell would someone put 87 in an LT1? LOL

I would not really worry about it , just dont thrash on the car...
If you want to make it a lil safer.... go top it off with the rest in whatever the highest (non leaded) octane you can find...
THen after you run through the next tank..... keep the good stuff in it.
My guess is he did it to sell it.....

On the same topic.... I had the vette out the other day (its really an 85 with a TPI engine) and I put the cheap shit in a nearly empty tank.... When I left the gas station I hammered on it to merge with the highway, I could actually hear the "rattling" or pinging ,and it huffed (cant tell what color it was cause it was dark) whatever you call it..... Took it easy for the next 250 miles till it was empty and filled up the good stuff on the way to work..... quiet power......and no huffin...Quote:

I just putt mine around and run the mid grade gas in it. I try to take it easy on the old girl because its past the 253k mark now but I know an engine that is almost 11 to 1 does not like piss gas so when I do the engine swap ect it will be drinking the 91 octane that is available here.

Maybe not but after reading some of the really old posts I can tell a much more friendly manner here and that applies to all the members here who want to help out other LTX people or just talk back and forth and because you have chosen to take on a leadership (part owner) role here then the direction the site is taking is a reflection of not only you but the other owners as well and I for one think this is awesome.Quote:

87 won't kill your car, but you'll notice the difference. Unlike the Vette which was mentioned above, the LT1 will pull timing to prevent issues ... you're going to be down a few ponies, but it won't hurt anything. If you can find some 93 (Sunoco sells it I think), fill your tank with that, then drive only the 91 from then on out (as has been said). I bet the guy sold you the car thinking it was a POS with no power ... gunna step up to some real power of a Honda Civic! Woot! :D Idiot.
That's what the knock sensor is for (as long is it's in working order). It will pull timing so a lower grade gas can be run without engine damage. I believe the manual states 91 to 93 is preferred for best performance, but not required.
My Ex-GF drove my daily driver car for a month or two. One day I found a slip for fuel and it was 87 octane. Turns out she was buying that crap all along. After that there was a note inside the fuel cap that said "91 OCTANE". Regardless it didn't cause any issues, and when I tore down the motor everything looked fine.
You'll be fine, just drive it nice. I'd fill it up with 93 and run it almost empty, just IMO.
Wouldn't hurt buying the lil bottles of stp fuel additives. Jet fuel baby!
