Wash the car with Dawn first and foremost, get all the old stuff (if any) off the car, as well as crud, whatnot. Use a new sheeps wool mitt, separate clean and dirty water buckets. Once wash is done, claybar the entire car. This will get you down to smooth as glass paint. At this point, take a look and see if you have swirls, marring, fine scratches, etc. If you do, break out the polisher (PC7424 anyone?) and the compounds. ZPC from Zaino is fantastic for a quick cleanup. If you need more aggressive, I myself prefer the Menzerna (they're German) line of polishes. Once the machine polishing is done to satisfaction, hit it with the Zaino and take pictures of your work.
For towels, 100% cotton including stitching and edges is the ultimate "take care of it" towel. Microfiber towels work very well but test on a CD surface first to see if it's gonna scratch. Not all are created equal.
If you really want to go the extra "precaution" mile, get a good leaf blower to use to dry the car. Believe me when I say that once the polishing and Zaino is all done, you can literally dry the car in about 5 minutes this way without touching a towel to it.
