I'm build my LT1 with a forged 383 setup. And was wondering if a main girdle would be a good idea? Or a front main strap? Or mabe both.
The engine will see track time. And will be sprayed down the road. And I've read that the front main is kinda a week link in our blocks.
The weak link in a stock LT1 is the rod bolts. Never heard anything derogatory about the front main. I think I'd bypass the girdle and get your block completely prepped with splayed billet main caps (and of course with that you'd need an align hone), obviously bored then honed with a torque plate, zero decked, clearanced for the extra swing of the crank, cleaned, new cam bearings, and what ever else you can think of. Unless you are planning on making SERIOUS hp out of your engine, I wouldn't worry about the girdle and just stick to the basics of getting your block correct. With that and a good (read: forged) rotating assy, you should be golden. Maybe someone else has some ideas as well.
I'm getting the block bored and honed with torq plates, decked. And all of that good stuff. The LT1 shares the bottom end with gen1 sbc. And I know sbc pretty good.
I've just read online that people have had the crank walk on the front main. And they recomended the strap to keep it from distorting.
If you will be spinning the engine to 7000 rpms or higher it is a good idea. Anything below that just the three splayed centers are ok.

I'm making 650 rear wheel, probably over 700 at the crank. I just have 3 splayed center mains, nothing special on the ends. I'm only spinning to 6500 though.
