383 queston

I have a 383, forged eagle crank, studded mains, srp pistons 16cc dish, eagle h beam rods, block is half filled it is a 93 block its been decked the engine it self looks brand new inside besides the bearings. lets just say ive had it for over a year and im trying to figure out where to go from here with it. Problem is it has a 2pc rear main crank. I have a t56 trans so i would need a aftermarket flywheel set up for that (bolt pattern is diff). Now what would i do about balance on the front an rear of the crank? This motor was built many years ago. it is a lt1 motor and has the 2pc rear main adapter on the back of the block it used to have a 700r4 behind it an a sfi approved flex plate. It had a stock lt1 crank and hub i believe but i do not have it. Is there any way to tell a internal balance or external balance crank, or if i will need a special balance flywheel and balancer? i ran the part numbers on the crank and cant come up with any info. so please help. heres a few pics so u can get a idea oo an the date on camera is correct back when i first got the motor for christmas

Its got holes drilled in the counterwights it should be a internal balance

Was this motor built with boost in mind? Those dished pistons are going to pull the SCR/DCR way down.

They wont make it that bad, unless there are big chambered aftermarket heads going on them.

My stock heads decked with my 24cc dished pistons are only going to put it around 9.5:1

Agreed, but it's less than ideal. Even with an .028" head gasket, stock deck height, and a small CC (54cc), SCR is 11:1.

Nowadays, it doesn't make much sense for an N/A performance rebuild to be below 11.5:1. JMHO. :) If he's not looking for every last ounce of power then it'll be fine.

If you do decide to go boost in the future it looks like you will be good to go also.:finger:

yea it was built for boost and spray, it had a powerdyne and a nitrous express kit on it. compression ratio is around 10-2 to 10-4 with the stock castings and the block being decked and heads being shaved. the pistons are going to be replaced for diamond 12-5's sooner or later depends if i end up spending 500 bucks or more on a crank or flywheel. Motor isnt going to be N/A but isnt going to be on boost ether.

that is good to kno about the crank being internal balance if it has holes drilled into the counter weights cuz as u see in the pics there are a few holes drilled in them

i only paid 500 bucks for the assembled long block, had ported 2.02 1.6 heads on it with cc306 cam, so really the pistons dont matter to much to me.

I got a bit of a chuckle out of this. :)

Obviously you're going to be spraying. I'd bump the compression up substantially with a flat-top piston and a thinner head gasket.

thats the plan i want atleast 12-1 and at the time it gets that it will also get a SR set up, AFRs and a single plane and many more things that it will need. but right now im going to use it as a quick replacement. 10-4 shouldn't hurt me to bad right now. im sure the stock short block is making less then that right now.

Stock compression is 10.5:1. As it sits with the pistons on it now and stock heads, it will be closer to 9.9:1.

Shit, you could save yourself some money and run 87 octane! :)
