Such is life as an LT1 owner.
What the hell happened?
Current theory is the distributor hold down loosened up, never disengaged with cam gear so motor never lost cam signal; kept running, and it disengaged the oil pump.
No oil pressure and it makes bad noises now. Also trashed a few valve seals from slamming into a 7k rpm limiter since my trans wouldn't shift.
Whatever could go wrong, did.
How loose was the hold down? You'd have to lift close to 3/8" to disengage the oil pump. I would suspect if it was that loose the distibutor would have had the timing all kinds of wonky. Were you running a standard volume or high volume pump? Steel sleeved at the shaft end or nylon?
Its only a theory, once I pull apart motor I will know more.
I would say it def seemed loose enough to jump 3/8 but I am just speculating.
I hear ya. Gotta realize as that distributor pulls out of the hole it rotates like a son of a gun. Probably talking 20° of timing easy. I'm guessing you had a welded pickup tube?
I had problems with my distributor rotation on nitrous. I doubt it would have been able to lift off the oil pump and still run.
