I know the LT1 SS had a Torsen option and the Z28 received an Auburn or equivalent. For some reason I always thought the Torsen became standard for the LS1 SS. I am not 100% sure, but I think the regular Z28 LS1's had an Auburn.
Valvoline full synthetic doesn't require the additive but its best to add it also.
Ive had quite a few ppl complain about noise with the synthetic s

Truthfully, I wouldn't run Royal Purple anything on a bicycle chain. RP is a marketing hype and one time dyno # queen.
I have personally seen many tests that RP has failed in a very short time.
SS RRR, this goes back a number of years now, but, here's why I think the LS1 SS's had the Auburn posi.
When the LS1's debuted in the Z28 Camaro's (1998), SLP in Toms River, NJ was doing the SS "conversions" for GM. I'm thinking that part of SLP's SS "conversion" was to take the (then) stock Torson posi's out of the Z28 Camaro's and replace it with their Auburn unit. I'm thinking this is correct, because during that time ..... SLP was selling a ton of $99 Torson "take out" LSD's, (advertised with having less than 7 miles on them). I'm pretty sure these extremly low milage $99 Torsen LSD's that SLP was selling out of their parts catalog ....... came out of the Z28 Camaro's that SLP was "converting" to SS's????
Did a quick search, and it looks like we're both right. Well, you're more right than I am, but nonetheless... :)

My 96 ss definatly had a factory torsen..no clutch packs there...I picked up the pieces...lol..
Torsens are great for auto cross/road race. Not so much for drag racing. The casing is thin and has many vent holes which makes it extremely vulnerable breakage.
