They don't weight anything. Which is great for takeoff and landing, but is really bad if you loose power as it will want to slow down and hit stall speed in a hurry. You really would need to nose the plane down quickly and keep some airspeed up in that instance to keep it controllable.
Keep in mind that the VAST majority of ultralights are built really cheeply, and are actually quite dangerous. The Zipster is a lot safer than most out there. But even then, you can still get yourself in trouble if you push it too far and don't know what you are doing. You and your nephew were lucky.
I have been put through a lot of very intense training that most pilots don't even get the chance at. I've been put in planes for the first time ever without barely knowing anything about them, and expected to land and fly under less than ideal situations. I'm no veteran pilot by any means, but I do know that for something like this you need to have some experience. I plan on getting a few lessons in similar weighted aircraft even before I fly the Zipster for the first time.
