There is no way in hell I would run a 306 in my 398. And realistically you don't need a snall base circle cam just because you have a stroker. I don't run one in mine. Pick the right rods like my compstar h beams and you don't have an issue. Off the shelf cams are what they are.... a basic quick throw it in and run it. Sure it will run ok, but why not for a few bucks more get something that works the best it can with what you have in place. Sure my feet can fit in a size 14 shoe. It doesn't make sense to wear one that's a 14 and one that is a 12 if I wear a size 12 shoe. I stick with my custom grind and enjoy the times I run.
I guess we have a big difference of opinion on what "performs well". A cc306 trying to support 398 cubes with a single plane intake would leave an EASY 50-60hp on the table compared to a camshaft with 15+ more degrees of duration and more lift, taking advantage of heads that are near 300cfm. You'd be satisfied with it, I wouldn't. If Neil simply swaps out the 350 cube shortblock for a 398 cube shortblock and retains the same cam and heads, he'll pick up MAYBE 30-35hp and have himself a sweet 440rwhp 398ci LT1.
Happy with it on his 350, yes.
Not how you worded it at all, but whatever.
They were clueless when I requested a camshaft for my needs. Very difficult to deal with.
I don't leave silly sarcastic crap, and winky faces. Like I said leave that stuff to the keyboard racers on LS1tech.
Give me an example of a stout performing stroker engine that runs the cc306. Minimum 383 cubes. I don't care what bodystyle, f-bod, Corvette, b-body, whatever. You show me the car and the ET/mph, and i'll show you a car that is leaving a lot of power on the table. You act like i'm bagging on that camshaft or something. I'm not. It has its place. It is an excellent camshaft for stock cube engines running stock heads or mild heads, like an LE1 package, or similar. It doesn't belong on 383 cubes or larger.
Never intended to reuse the CC306, it sounds great and makes good power, the 415rwhp we made through the 12 bolt was never getting to finish tuning the car. We intended to go back but life happened i.e the Deep Water Horizon and the car sat for a long time. With the stroker I imagine it'll have a ton more low end, but the thing I want to avoid is a car that only makes power up top. I want some thing with a broad and useable power band that's still fun to drive every where. The street twin will kill your leg in traffic before you notice the cam lol
I doubt that we have a different opinion of what "performs well". I never stated though that a 306 is a 'best performing cam'. THAT is where we seem to conflict. No doubt.....that if you wanted or needed to max out on power, there would be other cam designs that would outperform a 306. BUT......that is not to say that a 306 can't perform well in a 383+ci LTx.
Well......I could tell you about the 306 I had in my old 396ci.....but that would be so easy that you'll say I'm lying or something.....so I won't bother. But.....did I leave power on the table with that cam? Yeah......I most certainly did. Did I need to go with a different cam to get into the 11's? Yes.....I did. But.....did the 306 take my full-weight Impala with 3.73 gears, and shorty headers deep into the 12's? Huh........yeah.......it did.
Oh SNAP! Dammit! i just brought up the performance of my old 396. How embarrassing :faceinpalm:.
And BTW......I last dealt with Comp Cams when I got my SR Cam and shaft mounted rockers.....maybe 5 years back. I knew exactly what I wanted and the tech still tried to get me to go a different route.....so there probably is a lot about what you say about their custamer service.

No.....not really. The 306 had a bit less low end in my engine than a smaller cam that I had......but a lot more top end than that smaller cam.
I would say that a 306 cam is a high RPM cam; and if you're looking for that kind of performance, then that's what you'll get.....pretty much without regard as to your displacement. But.....as stated, it'll scream at higher RPMs.

here is a 306 cammed 383 that most of you guys know
now please enough of the argueing...just agree to disagree and quit splitting hairs just to argue

the 306 is just an OLD shelf grind...nothing wrong with it but its not the best either.
