I saw they were celebrating 65 years since the track opened. I was there in 1960 just after it opened. Buddy had a 1958 Impala 2 dr hardtop, with a 348 “big block” (the one with the kidney shaped valve covers), 3x2 bbls, and 3-on-the tree. Ran it a couple passes, don’t remember how fast. Couple months later he bought a brand new 1960 Corvette, top of the line 283 fuelie, solid lifter cam. He says “let’s go to Island”. OK, we drive from Morristown up to Island, but he drives past the entrance. His family had a summer house at Mountain Lake, just up the road. He drops the ‘vette off, takes his dad's beater, and we go to Island and sit in the stands…… he didn't want the ‘vette to get covered with dust……
