I swear by my Glock. Only gun ill carry.
Springfield armory XD series
Go to your local range or gun shop and handle as many different makes and models as you can. In my personal experience, a Springfield Armory X D is the best feeling handgun to me. Everyone has a different grip so one might feel better than another.
But I'll bet you'd love an x d
SP2340 specs are here, its a great gun for carry use (not that I do because of a lack of CCW) and Sig makes a quality firearm.

I was just going off the "occasional" family target shooting, and talking about bigger handguns.
I CC my Glock 17 with no issues and will have it forever. Definitely agree with hitting up a gun shop. Even if you don't buy there, you have get an in person feel, size and look of a lot of models.
Knew I'd get some killer feedback here, just shot a buddies 9mm colt, not sure of model but polymer bottom half if that helps. I didn't like it too much.
Think I'm about to run down the street to the pawn/gun store and just see what feels good in my hand. Ammo is scarce! I can't even find any 22's. wonder if the ranges are operating normally? Just called every store in town for some 9mm plinkers with no luck at all.
