Now that's just fucked up!!! I normally try not to knock someone's form of art but the line has to be drawn somewhere....and NOT carved outta someone's back!!!
Scarification has been around for years and years... it takes a certain kind of person to appreciate things such as tattoos and piercings. I personally hated the idea of scarification when I first heard of it.
But in time, I was intrigued by the idea for a few different reasons, some of which are personal so I wont get into them. I don't think that some of you understand that things like this are releases for people. Unfortunately there are those that get things done because they think it is "cool" and those are the ones I would call idiots.
But for others... going through the process of piercings or tattoos or scarification is very emotional and has a much deeper meaning than just how it looks. I know I have/have had piercings done because (I suppose you could call it masochistic) it helps me deal with stresses in life, and my tattoo was done because it was something that reminded me of being a kid and just having freedom and fun.
Scarification, while more extreme, is along the same lines. So many people view scars as ugly or a deformation, but when you can take a scar and turn it into something meaningful and beautiful it completely changes the perspective. I understand that many (probably most) will not agree with me and personally I don't really care because these are just things that people use to enhance themselves in their eyes, or just release their anger or emotions artistically.
Sometimes people want a constant reminder of sometimes awful or sometimes amazing things that have happened in their lives. Your body is yours, and you are free to do what you want with it.

Well put. But definitely not for me.
It has been around forever... it was a tribal thing in some cultures. I seem to remember it resembling alligators/crocodiles and other reptiles. I also remember it being cuts... not removing peices of skin.
I understand that & to an extent I agree, but seriously how much stress could you possibly have to give you the idea to go ahead and do that
The reasons it is "removing pieces of skin" is to change the thickness of the lines, like how a tattoo gun will use 6-7-8 needle setups for thicker lines and filling in and such. Thinner lines generally look more like cuts, but the reason scarification uses more "removal" is because cuts have a chance of healing if the skin closes back together around it, which can happen easier with thin lines. When the skin is actually removed there is a larger guarantee that the body will take to a scar.
Like I said, it is not a new occurrence, so it is not as if people just were like "Oh I think I'm gonna get my back hacked apart." People take A LOT of time researching this stuff and designing what they want and making sure it is done correctly, because if it is not, there can be brutal consequences involving infections and such.
People had asked me before with a couple piercings I had, why the fuck I would do that or where I would even get the idea for that. For me, I just wanted them (I'm referring to my nape [back of my neck], and the top side of my wrist) and I took a lot of time figuring out how I wanted them, unfortunately my body doesn't take well to surface piercings (which happens in >50% of people that get them). The pain itself is what causes you to release your stress.
Let me put it this way;
A girl gets raped by a very close family member... this is a beyond traumatic experience, that she will most definitely never forget. BUT this girl wants to move on in her life and to her the only way she can move past this is the pain of getting something such as scarification. It may not sound natural or it may not sound logical, but for some people there are few things that can give them relief. This girl grew up with pain, grew up with trauma in her life... and in her mind, trauma is all that will heal her.
I know things like this are hard to understand for most, and like I said there is the unfortunate group who do things like this to be cool, but some people need things like this on a level that most can't even fathom.
I wouldn't say thats hard to understand by any means, it's just when I see something like that I just think of how much pain it would of caused. Tattoos and piercings are one thing, but on a scale of actual pain your gonna take they are nothing compared to carving skin from your back. The example you gave puts it in perspective a lil' more, but still thats a lil' much in my books
Some things are actually less painful than you would imagine, like my nape and wrist piercings. My friends thought it would hurt like hell and to me, it didn't really hurt too bad. Some people can take an exorbitant amount of pain, but also some parts of the body are a lot less sensitive than others.
I absolutely LOVED the feeling of having my tattoo being done, but it was also done on the top half of my back (Total of 4 sessions ~6 hours, and it only took that long because I always scheduled later at night so we only did a couple hours at a time) and your back is one of the least sensitive places to have a tattoo done, the only place where I felt a large amount of pain was when he started to come close to my spine in a few places.
After a while of taking so much, you tend to go numb and things don't feel as bad as you would imagine.
That made me cringe! Wow!!!
