Water pump conundrum to electrify or not to electrify

Since my AC delco water pump took a crap, I am looking at my options. I have $20 in points at Autozone, so I am planning on buying a New "lifetime" warranty pump from them so I get 2 pumps basically for the price of 1.

I will keep my leaking delco pump and open it up to either fix it, OR I am thinking about converting to electric

Opinions on an electric waterpump on a daily driver?

have they improved? I remember back when they first came out they werent very reliable.

I was thinking if I do install a pump to put a voltmeter or ammeter on the pump to see the voltage drop so I know when its bad

My camaro ran an ewp from summit for over 10 years and never an issue. I dd'd it for a long time till the fleet grew.

did you have a light or anything on the pump to know it was running?

for now the plan is to thread the weep hole on the replacement pump and run a tube down by the oil pan so the new opti going doesnt get fragged yet again

Not sure a light is gonna prove much more than the system has voltage. You would wanna monitor current but even then, why not just monitor engine temp...?

I'm eventually going to get around to making a temperature alarm circuit to monitor engine temp using a thermistor (prob factory style temp sender) and buzzer. Unless you have your eyes glued to your temp gauge, the chances of catching your motor overheating are pretty slim if the EWP were to cut out suddenly while driving. I've only had EWPs or fuses fail at startup though.

There are warning light circuits that already exist though.

I have had my Meziere EWP on for 18 years and 95k mi. Way longer than any OEM AC Delco WP lasted

Personally I find the temp gauge, like the rest of my gauges, tell me all the 411 I need to know and by habit I keep a eye on them

A solid relay & fuse wiring are critical to any EWP working well. IMHO don't cheap out and get a CSR

If AC Delco had spent maybe $.03 instead of $.01 on the seal inside the mechanical maybe they would not weep so quickly. The "run a fitting and tube from WP" idea to divert the weep away from Opti saves the Opti...but still the WP is failing

I bought a spare EWP about 16 years ago thinking my EWP would crap itself in like 20k mi or something like that and NAPA or any other chain auto part store will not have one so I keep it in the trunk. It is still there NIB 18 years later....YMMV

I can change the EWP in less than 5 min on the side of the road if needed
