They are misinformed and/or delusional. A person can debate which is stronger straight or splayed but either is stronger than 2.
That's what I thought and I asked that same question lol
4 bolts, assuming the space between the threaded holes is adequate, will allow more fastening force than 2. It's not even really debatable. Same reason basically why larger trucks will have more lug nuts/studs than smaller economy cars.
I have 383 that's being built. I tried to find a 4 bolt block but unsuccessful. Do you guys think a girdle and studs would suffice for 6-700 flywheel hp? I plan on running custom cam and 200 shot on top.
Sorry for jacking your thread.

I have splayed 4 bolt mains , my engine was built with nitrous in mind , i have another block that will be getting the same treatment when the time comes.
My cousin has a 96 impala with a 383 and a turbo . He still has 2 bolt mains but tge machinist cut his main caps down and installed billit straps and his car has held together fine on 10 pounds of boost but he's turning it up finally so we shall see
also keep in mind that with a 4 bolt cap you are mounted closer to the side of the pan rail. Making the cap stronger and tieing up the bottom of the block togather better

Here's a picture of my cousins 2 bolt with billit straps. I've never seen anything like it before.
Yeah, that's what I thought. For some reason the machinist felt that this was a better option for his build .
I had to really push the same guy to install my splayed 4 bolt mains. He was concerned that it would weaken the block drilling into the webbing.
This guy is a very good engine builder he used to build engines for roush racing and he has built a small block chevy that revved 10,000 rpm and held it just fine repeatedly . But his concerns seemed pretty much just with the LT1 block , i don't think he's had a ton of them in his shop . Maybe I'll ask him to explain his concerns a bit more in depth the next time i stop into his shop.
