I was installing my new Opti and I broke one of the 3 bolts off in the timming cover

So I was all excited about getting my camaro back on the road that when I was bolting my new opti on and tightning it down I ended up braking one of the bolts off into the block. Almost all the thread is stuck in there.

So I guess I need to pull the timing cover now. I Have never done this before so I would appreciate some guidance. Is there any thing that should be done "while I'm there" new timing chain? My timing cover gasket was leaking anyways but I was just going to leave it as is. Guess I can fix that now. Seriously all this is really pissing me off. I am almost thinking I should just order a cc503 since I'm already there. :jest:


I am a little worried about whatever deals with the water pump. I don't want to cause any sealing problems with the block and the pump and it is making me nervous thinking about it. If anyone knows of any how to's please let me know.

Man this sucks, I can't take my engine out to replace oil pan and timing cover gaskets.... now what? I assume a shop would charge me at least 1500$ to replace oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket and timing chain and water pump seal..... this is so stupid.

I pay a shop to replace my blown head gasket because I knew the engine would be gunked up with sludge (2200$). I get the car back and the same day I get it back the opti goes bad. I assume the shop spilled coolant all over it carelessly. I take the car in under warrenty and they tell me the opti is bad--and it is not related to the work they did so they can't warrenty it. THey offer to do the job for 600$ I decline. I order a delphi opti on amazon and go to instal it. End up ripping the boot on a spark plug wire :( and breaking a bolt off and getting it stuck into the block and/or timming cover. :shiner:

This is my daily driver as well. So I have been walking to school and work everyday. :claps: :claps: :claps: :disagree:

That really sucks to hear man. Even if you cant pull the engine, do you have access to a hoist? Once to change my oil pan and timing cover gasket I actually unbolted the motor mounts and lifted the motor. Just BARELY gave me enough clearance to change the oil pan gasket. So def worth a shot... id go back In there and tell them you know it was their fault and explain how easy it is to ruin an opti if they weren't careful and the opti worked fine previously. Tell them youll pay for parts if theyll do the work, and if they still decline threaten to get a lawyer. But be tactful and nice about it. An asshole seldom gets what he really wants. Lol. Good luck man

Well the manager drives a 383 lt1 c4 corvette and knows about lt1's plenty. They just don't want to agree to fix it under warrenty. They were happy to give me free advice over the phone though.

Anyway im going to try and just pull off the timing cover and use superblue slicone to seal up whatever i need. I was told to unbolt only the first 4 bolts on the pan to drop the front a little. My oil pan gasket already leaks anyway but changine the pan gaskket sounds horrible.

Good luck getting that pan to bend down without at least loosening all the pan bolts. Lol. The pan gasket really isnt bad if you can lift motor all the way to trans tunnel. (Unbolt the trans also)

Have you tried a right angle drill to put a pilot hole in the bolt remains mad then use a bolt out on it? Do the simple stuff first, pull the timing cover last.

Don't take this the wrong way but...
If you can't afford to pay a shop to do the work and your ready to half ass it and cover everything in silicone just run it with 2 bolts and deal with it when you put a cam in it. Again I am not trying to knock you I have just seen plenty of customers cost themselves a lot more money by trying to save a buck.

I doubt the shop got the opti wet enough to cause it to go out. Shoot they probably didn't even pull the water pump, just drained the block and did the head job.

Don't half asks it. Attempts to get it out yourself, pilot hole and ez out are your friends along with generous amounts of pb blaster. If you can't get it out yourself, pay someone.

I had thought of trying an easy out as well, but the thought of metal shavings getting into the timing cover also came to mind. I guess it depends if the bolt broke at the head or by the block
