Starter recommendations?
I've got the car back up and running, but my GMPP LT4 "hi torque" starter does not seem to like the new motor. Stepped up compresson from 10.9:1 to 11.9:1 and the starter is struggling. Motor is a 397. What works like a champ on a (semi) high compression stroker? Yeah, I can page through JEGS and Summit, but want to see what is actually working well for our members with similar (or nastier) builds. Thanks.

I have a powermaster master torque starter on my 383 car and it works great.

ive had a jegs hi torque mini starter, paid 149.00 for it in 2005 for my 3rd gen. its now on my Lt1 h/c/i fresh bottom end 6 speed car. Ive swapped it off of many of my cars now lol. i think its good for up to 15:1 compression or something too.

Thanks guys! I may have jumped the gun. I dropped the starter, added a 1/32 shim and fired the car twice and it caught the flexplate great and turned the motor over easily both times. I thought it wasn't up to the new build because the block is the same, the flex plate is the same, and the starter is the same. Not sure why it suddenly needed a shim, but that certainly would not be the strangest stunt my car has pulled. :jest:
Note, both starts the motor was cold, so I need to check it when everything is hot to see if I really fixed it.

I just installed a Powermaster last year. Works great and a lot faster than my old factory unit.

oem 11.8 to 1 385 starts on the first click

I've heard problems with the powermaster breaking their cones and breaking the bellhousing in the process with the higher compression engines. A lot of guys are going with the Jegs high torque

A friend of mine has a 383, cant remember his compression i think it's a 12:5 but he went to advance and got a 95 corvette starter and it fires up first try no probs
