View Full Version : Rearend went out what do I need to do

So, the other day I was going down the highway, and my car kind of jerked like the rearend locked up but it didn't completely lock. Immediately after the jerk it started to make a bad grinding sound (kind of like something metal dragging on the pavement). So I get it back to the shop, the wheels turn and do not move in or out, and if I turn the wheels while it is in park everything seems fine. If I put it in neutral and spin both wheels or hold one still there is a clunking noise (kind of like the gears don't quite match up right). When I put it in reverse it doesn't really make a grinding noise, but it does make the car shake. We also unbolted the driveshaft and got the same sound just not as loud, I think the driveshaft was just amplifying the noise. We took the plate off the rearend and looked at the gears and everything seemed fine, but it was low on oil. Put new oil in and it still made the noise. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it? I would just like to know where to start. If I can find a whole rear end for cheap I might just get it.
Summary, rearend makes a loud weird noise. It was low on oil. It still makes the same noise, just quieter with the driveshaft removed. Gears LOOK fine but I'm not sure they are.
I have a stock 10 bolt with strange 3.73's. The car also has the famous wobbly driveshaft. And the car has about 120,000 miles on it.
All help is appreciated!

did you have new bearings installed with the ring and pinion? my guess from what i read, either the pinion bearing is trashed or the carrier bearings are!

Just find a complete rear end, I just sold a perfect working one for $100 with all the brakes/lines/etc on it.

I didn't install the new gears so I have no clue what they replaced when they did the gear swap. It was leaking from the front if that tells you anything. I am really dumb when it comes to the drivetrain.

That's the cardomain page for when he installed the gears.

I've been looking for one, but they are hard to come by in this area. There is one junkyard that has a lot of f-bodies. I'm going to check with them monday. The price on their website is $600 and I am not going to pay that.

Oh, it's a torsen. You probably broke a gear in the torsen unit then. If the ring and pinion look fine, then the diff is probably toast.

I've done that, what exactly am I looking for when I do that? It still made the sound when I hold the wheel or spin both of them the same direction.

That's what I signed up for!

I wish I could but I'm just a poor college kid, and my car doesn't make near enough power nor have enough traction to push a 10 bolt to it's limits.

I wish it was that simple. I don't think I've been much over 100 in my car since that ticket which was a year ago. The bike is a different story. I think the most ground I've covered at 100+ was about 60 or 70 miles, but that was on the bike.

I found a rebuild kit it includes the pinion bearings and differential bearings. Have you guys used this kit or the website?

So I tore the rearend apart this weekend and found out it was the front pinion bearing. It was destroyed haha. I think the hardest part of the whole job was getting the pinion out. I finally got it out then I made a few calls and found out napa had the bearing I needed. We did run into some problems getting it back together though. First we couldn't get the bearing in all the way so we screwed the yoke on and kind of pressed the bearing in. The bad thing is my dad put too much torque on the bolt and the pinion didn't spin freely. Is this a problem? Could it be that the bearing just isn't broken in yet? My dad did put the race in the freezer over night to make it easier to install maybe the bearing was fitting tighter inside the new race? Anyways we tried to knock the yoke back out a little to make it move a little easier. Also I couldn't find any gear paint in town so we couldn't really set the shims up like they should be, but we did keep up with what sides the shims came off of. It is whining a little more than it used to though. I'm also not positive if I should put any positive traction additive in it either. The previous owner swapped the gears and carrier out, I think the one that is in it now is a zexel torsen? not positve though, not sure if that helps any either.
Any help would be appreciated thanks again.
P.S. How hot is the actual pinion supposed to get?

if i'm wrong, someone please say so, i thank that when it got over tightind, it cruched the crush ring more than when it was set at. i have never had a 10 bolt opened, so i don't know what all is in there. i had a ford truck, and i spun there tires alot in reverse, well it loosened the nut on the pinion, well when i tightind it back up, i got it tighter than it was, and from thet point, it had a hiss, and when it was cold, it would make a loud sound, like the brake ware marker was hitting the rotor. so maybe that is what is going on. sorry about my spelling.

when you tighen it. i dont believe it has to be free spinning. but when your bearing went out, it could have caused it to make a new grove. now that its in right it may cause it to whine a bit. and believe me my car is a stock 96 z28 m6. and i have sheered teeth off of the pinion when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. the second set i sheered was a set of richmond 3.73s and that was from a dig.
