you dont want 4.10's in an auto car, its to much gear, go with 3.73's

Well, I had a 96 WS6 A4, with 4.10's in an otherwise stock 10 bolt. Only other mods were gutted cats, 3" catback, and shift kit, and I was running 13.45 at 100 mph, and 70 mph on the highway was in the 3k rpm range. 10 bolts will hold up alot longer in an auto car than in an M6 car.

3.73 will give you the boost down low that you need without giving up all of your trap speed

i just drove my car back to my place today. its an A4, cammed, no stall, with 4.10s. at 70 i am at 2725 according to my laptop. i was data loggin it a few times on my home. its extremely easy to drive and i got 22 mpg on my way back. doesnt like going slow though... sounds awesome going down the highway right in my LM1's resonating rpms!! i also have the spray and on my street tires i just get into OD. on my MTs i stay in third. Good luck and how did you get 3.42s in your car?

Honestly if you have 3.42's in your car, 3.73's are not going to be a noticable difference.

If you want a noticable difference, do the 4.10's...

(just make sure you really have 3.42's from stock in there)

The only way that car has 3.42's is either some one put a 6speed rear in that car, some one put the gears in it or the dealer messed with the RPO codes when the car is built so the car having them stock is about a 10% chance compared to the 90% work was done. If it's a stock auto car you either have 2.73's or 3.23's..

with a 350ci, CC306, 3400 stall, 3.73's and my 275/40/17's i'm at 2,700 at 75mph.

I daily drove that 96 for a couple of years, including trips between Jacksonville NC and Austin TX. It really wasn't that bad, though I think I'd go with 3.73's if I was going to gear another auto car, if only for the milage. And I don't remember if I was in OD through the traps or not.

just throwing this out there, i've always been in an m6 so a stalled a4 i'm a bit unfamiliar with, but to what knowlege i do have about cars, my thought process would be that you'd run out of gear with it being so tall, basically slowing you down at the top end causing you to run slower, unless you've modded your motor to spin higher RPM's. basically i think your just gonna run out motor when racing. as far as street driving, thats totally up to you and what you wanna spend on gas. i'm in the dark as to rpms in a stalled a4 on the street.

i can safely spool the motor up to 7k .

whats your dyno look like? i'd talk to the people that did your motor or where ever you h/c combo came from and see what they recommend i know when doing up grades the cam, stall, gears and tire size all work together to effect 1/4 mile times, and if any of those don't work well with the others your essentially slowing your car down. bigger isn't always better. having a car dialed in correctly will net your best results. how much track time vs. street time does the car see?

i'd go for it then

let me ask this question. how are 4.10's on m6's?
i loved my 4.10's in my last car. trying to get one now since my current ring and pinion is shot. just normal driving i'd start off in 2nd, skip 3rd and go to 4th, then cruise around at 45 mph in 5th. i never retuned to fix the spedo or the tach though.

some say 3.73, others say go with the 4.10's. split the difference and throw in some 3.90's?
