looked around on the forum and couldnt find anything but was wondering if anyone has had any luck with quieting gear whine. i was told the previous owner blew up the rear and took it to a tire store to have a new one installed and the tech just threw it in there per his request to be cheap, basically did no shimming so it whines like a banshee now. its next on the "to be fixed" list but was wondering if there was any gear oil i could use to help protect it or quiet it down some, like royal purple or something like that. thanks.

full synthetic can "help" with the whine but not rmove it completely...have you checked the level to be sure it is not just too low?

If they whine, it means the gears were not set up correctly. The only way to stop the whine is to install new gears.

More sound deadening in the rear area ie: install some heavy carpet on top of the factory carpet.

multi quote wasnt working so:
i'll try synthetic. i guess you do the additive like normal with that?
they are stock replacement as far as i know. stock ratio and all.

ya i just wondered if there was anything i could do before replacement. i didnt think so but anything would be nice. its loud as hell and causes some rattling in the car as well which just adds to.

i dont even have factory carpet right now. just another thing that needed to be replaced so it came out in the mean time to reduce weight. i can even hear my fuel pump prime when i turn the key on. i guess i could throw some pillows and a blanket back there. could come in use for other things as well

are you planning on keeping your 10bolt and upgrading the gears, or do you have plans to upgrade the 3rd member?

Well, just pull the cover off and see if the DAMAGE is DONE.... if its salvagable, new bearings and have it all set up right... Id hate to see the person who buys it get screwed.....

If the gears whine now, setting them up again might just make them whine more. Once the gears have a pattern worn into them, changing it will only make it worse. Those gears are shot, you need new ones. It sucks, but that's the only way to get them quiet.

thanks for the all the help. i already knew i couldn't just reset them but didnt know if there were any tried and tested aftermarket fluids that could help. hopefully they got enough life for the savings to build.

I gotta disagree..... if its just bearing whine, because that is shot... there may be no damage to the gears at all....

Usually it isn't bearings that whine. It's gears.
My gears whine, and a LOT of aftermarket gears I've had / heard whine.
Maybe no one knows how to set them up right. Mine been whinin for thousands of miles

The last time I drained the dif fluid in my car, I forgot to add posi additive..... next thing I know on the highway its making noise, like a loud screaming/whinning sound.... whooped the main pinion bearing....

it depends on the type of gear also. i usually get whine with richmonds, not much but it is there. they seem to be more agressively cut. 3 different sets of stockers never made a noise and the ford racing gears in my 8.8 are quite. same guy set up i wanna say 8 different gear sets for me not only in my ss and the richmonds always seemed to make a slight noise.
you could try the lucas gear oil to quite it down. that stuff is thick as hell.
also i had a pinion nut back out on a car a while back. that got noisey.

If you're implying that the lack of a posi additive destroyed the bearing, I'm going to call BS. The posi additive is for the posi, not the bearings. It contains additives that aid in the friction of the clutches, nothing more.

My uncle just finished installing my Motive gears, and they are as quiet as stock. I'm not disagreeing with you, I've heard of lots of guys having problems with aftermarket gears.
I will agree with ksmyss though. I've heard Richmonds usually whine because of the amount of nickel used in the gears.

Not at all... Just saying that is the order of how I found it....

are they stock ratio? you might have just got lucky because i've never heard anyone speak of aftermarket ring and pinion's and not say "gear whine" in the same sentence, anything's possible though. or he's just that good. either way i'd consider youself lucky to not have whine. i had GM 4.10's in my '97 and even they whined just the slightest bit.
also i'm 99% sure they didnt shim the ring and pinion which ='s gear whine. as far as other damage, rears and tranny's are about the only things i know little to nothing about so taking it apart myself wouldn't do me much good. i actually have an entire, non whining axle, waiting on me to get that i'm gonna swap with mine, slap on some new seals and such and call it a day. just that little thing called $$ stopping me right now.

No, I went from 3.23 to 3.73. He had to reuse my factory shims, but he said the pattern came out perfect. Maybe he just got lucky, but these things are as quiet as the last gears (minus the howling). But yea, he's been doing gear installs for years.
EDIT: Here's my thread on LS1tech, you can see others have had luck with Motive gears. So it's not just me.

colder temps causing the fluid to thicken a little maybe?just a guess

I'm gonna have to agree with others, gear whine with the richmonds is just a fact of life.. My dad is an ASE certified master tech and he tells everyone that comes in that the richmonds will whine before he installs them because its usually the case. We did HUFF's and they actually didnt whine to our shock and amazement, guess its just luck of the draw.

can't believe no one has mentioned just switch to 85-140. that's about the only thing you can do.

You might want to read this before you think about using that stuff:

i'll def try this. would this be close to or as thick as lucas?

were you using the lucas additive or an actual gear oil (if so whats the weight?) put out by Lucas?

it might have to do with the fact he used fully synthetic. as ksmyss said he's used it for years with no issues.
and as i questioned before, with all these ideas, do you still use the posi additive? i would assume so, but would like a definate. thanks.

i don't use any "additives". never have.
i used the 80-90 heavy duty gear oil http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=43&catid=12&loc=show
they also have 85-140. i used that once and my god, you will have a bitch of a time getting that in the diff. i also put posi additive in but i have used it without.
i used the royal purple once and shortly after the ring gear busted and when i drained the oil to pull the diff cover, it ran out like water. never used that again.
