hey guys, im starting my 355 project and i was wondering what type of stand to get. a buddy of mine is selling one for 35 bucks that is rated at 750lbs, is that a good stand to purchase, or should i get one that is rated for more weight?

thanks

That one will work fine, I think mine's rated at 750. One thing to look at is the front wheel design. How many does it have. I like the stands with 4 total wheels two wide set at the rear and two about half as wide set in the front. I've found that the 3 wheeled stands are more prone to want to tip once you start gettin some weight on the front of the engine.

Be careful though, those stands with the four wheels are nearly impossible to get into a hoist footprint far enough to get the motor connected to the hoist. I learned that the hard way, and really had to do some unsafe stuff to get my motor on my stand off of my hoist.

^^True, mine fits between my hoist but my friends does not. We had to hang the stand off the engine while it was still on the hoist and pull at an angle as we slowly lowered the stand and engine together. OP $35 is cheap enough and the stand pictured will do you just fine, just use caution if yuo have to roll it around!

yeah i def will, thanks man. one more thing, would you recommend pulling it out from the top or unbolting the front cradle and sliding the whole front suspension out with the motor:hmm:

That's kinda a loaded question! It depends on who you ask, I've done out and in both ways and will say this: if you have acess to or are using a rack do it from the bottom, otherwise do it from the top. I've seen several people get the front of the car high enough off the ground to get it out from the bottom but personally I'll avoid doing most of the work on my back as much as I can. Leaning over the car isn't much better for the back and knees though! When I did mine out the bottom I had a rack and it wasn't bad at all, when I did it from the top I just had to remove the balancer and LM alternator (I don't have AC or power steering only alternator).

haha yeah. i have been hearing drop it from the bottom because i have a cherry picker to lift the front end and a dolly to slide the bottom out lol
