I've currently got a 2 series carrier with 2.73 gears , I'd like to upgrade to a 3.42 gear. Is it easier or less expensive just going with a gear swap, or changing the whole rear end over . To buy the actual gears, then an install kit, its about the same price as just getting a whole rear axle, at least in the research I've done. Will an LS1 rear end bolt up to an LT1 without much modification, direct swap ? TIA

with the availability of Ls1 rears w/3.42 gears i would strongly suggest that swap. not only will you get the benefit of the gear you are looking for, you will have larger rear brakes....
the drawback is having to swap the e-brake cables, no big deal there, you will also need the rear brake line that goes from caliper to caliper.

If you swap in any USED rear be it lt1 or ls1 I would have it rebuilt with new bearings and seals anyways... so in that situation I think it would be more cost effective to swap gears and buy a rebuild kit

If your posi is in good shape just use your old rear. Just like stated above you dont know what you are getting with used parts. My posi was shot in my old rear and I bought a used 342 for 135 bucks and it ended up being good, but i got a great deal on it to.
