Today I I'm working on the electrical part of the car and replacing a fuel pressure gauge with water temperature gauge. Which got me to thinking about water temperatures for my car and how hot I think it will really get. With this car being carbureted instead of fuel injected that might have a factor in my decision but ultimately a cooler motor will make more horsepower. So for being a car that's not going to see extensive driving on the streets like cruises or road trips mainly going to be drag racing do I really need to run a thermostat? ... the vehicle has an electric water pump some people were talking about restrictor plates as I was reading. I'd like for some of y'all to weigh in on this please.

Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalkwith an lt1 you NEED to run a thermostat due to the design of the cooling system. this isn't a normal sbc.

Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalkyes it has everything to do with the reverse cooling. no stat it will bypass the engine

Never run anything without a thermostat. There shouldn't be any debate. Just run a cooler one. It's like a traffic cop sort of for your cooling system.

It's not how fast you mow. It's how you mow fast.

Okay so I definitely need something in there I saw some people talking about restrictor plates would I be able to use one of those

A cold motor doesn't always make more power than a correct temperature one either.

Run a 160/180* stat

I had a 160 in it before and it ran about 180 ... I would always get a little nervous when it ran 200 plus as it approaches the boiling temperature of water it just makes me nervous

Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalkbecause it starts opening at 160, full open by 180, which is fine. fluid under pressure raises boiling point. factory fan setpoint are 232-237f, because antifreeze under pressure doesn't boil till then

Zoo
run a 160 stat and have PCM programed to turn on fans lower than stock temp

if your motor is Carb now and not using a PCM than just get a inline temp switch to turn fans on at desired temp

but run a stat. you can buy ones that fail "open"

I run a 180 in mine and it never gets above 180 at the housing and the heads but the wp sensor will say 200. But I'm betting with a little searching.

The Hypertech 1008 is a 160 stat. Don't think it is a "fail safe" type....but what I have run for 19 years

If we are talking racing, fans are irrelevant here.

I have a 180* and on a hot ass summer day, its at 185* cruising, fluctuates down to 180*.

Honestly, you are overthinking this.

The oil needs to get hot, to drive off the moisture (water) that condenses from the piston ring blowby gasses. Leave that gunk in the oil and it forms harmful acids. That's why cars driven regularly on SHORT trips, not fully heating the oil, gunk up real fast.
