Anyone running 4.10 gears in an A4?
My pinon seal has been leaking and getting worse and now since my car is shifting into 3rd before the end of the 1/8th mile now I have been thinking of just swapping gears. Ive read alot about 3.73's and people say dont go 4.10's because it will be screaming on the interstate but I have never even had my car on the interstate and run in 3rd gear probably 75% of the time anyways since Im on backroads all the time. And obviously Im sure 4.10's would weaken the rear more than 3.73's?
I do plan to add more power later but by then Ill need a stronger rear anyways, just looking to get all I can out of a gear swap as possible.
Thanks

I have 4.10s in my Impala behind the A4. Also had them in my 95 that I built for my ex.

I'm thinking 4.10s but then again I'm kinda waiting on a rear out of a wrecked camaro to come up for sale. Anytime would be nice popo

Lol I'm waiting on something too but I'm not in a hurry haha.

Well I figured if I'm gonna do it I might as well get all I can out of it. The only complaints I see seem to be from people with no traction or that drive 80 to 90mph all the time.
Did you run them at the track before and after?

Lol... LT1convert has first dibs at it. Just waiting for it to be gone thru to rule it out as the reason for the crash.

It has 3.90s or 3.70s in it fwiw...

Yeah, Ltconvert is patiently waiting on first dibs. I'll never be able to afford it.

how tall a tire you running?

Calculator shows about 2700rpm at 70mph with 4.10's and .7 overdrive with a 26" tire so thats not too far off

I usually ride in 3rd right now at around 55mph witch has me cruising at about 2300
so with 4.10 and just using overdrive I would be at about 2100 rpm

I'm curious what the rpm would be at the 1\4 3.73 to 4.10 giving I'm still pulling pretty good with 3.23s at the end. You can make up for lack of hp with gears but just wondering I'll sit back now ty.

It would depend on converter slippage (if automatic)
And obviously your trap speed

Thanks I was was wondering the 3.73 vs 4.10 but I think 3.73 would be good. But if you keep getting beat by ricer's then I guess you got to do what ya got to do.

Not sure exactly how tall... but 50 series tires on a slightly wider size than stock...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170620/1b52087403f7bf59ddeb27001186e869.jpg

I've been looking into that, doesn't look hard but I don't see a good way to do the torque arm

Wow, never even knew they sold that. I honestly figured it would be a bit cheaper but it is coming from Hawks. Just the BASE stuff with abs adds up to $2300 ish Plus freight. Still not bad for a rear that will hold ALOT of power.

I don't have track times, but I went from 2.73s to 4.10s and the difference is insane. Hitting it from a stop is impressive. I do have a 3200 converter in mine and it actually stalls closer to 4000 with the 4.10s for some reason. With 275/40/17 at 70 It's roughly 2500 rpms. I only do a short few miles on the freeway everyday so it's not too bad. I would go 4.10s if you don't mind the noise and higher rpms.

Wow, that would be quite a change there. Thanks for the input as soon as funds are here ill be ordering gears
