View Full Version : Could I get an experienced eye to look at these bearings/crank journal.

So I am pulling out the bottom end in preparation to find a machine shop to clean the block.

The engine is out of a 94 corvette

I started to pull main caps off and noticed some scuffing/damage that I believe isn't normal. This is my first real tear down solo, so I am not exactly familiar on whats normal and whats not. Engine has 144,000 but surely a stock engine from the factory wouldn't sustain bearing damage like that? Either poor maintenance from the previous owner or a bad rebuild? I have driven the car exactly 100 miles before tear down

main/rod bearings. One of the rod bears have copper bleeding through.

And the cylinder walls have some discoloration

What would cause that scoring on the bearings?

With crank journal damage, is it a safe bet just to toss the crank? I was debating about a 383 stroker kit, if my crank is bad or unwise to use, I am just going to bite the bullet and do a stroker.

I'd run it if it was mine.... That's just caused from random dirt that might have gotten in the oil at one point...

That's normal wear.

I was hoping I had a good reason to go stroker  I may still do that, its just easier when your parts are bad to begin with lol

Thank you

looks like a motor that sat often. looks fine. id mic the crank, maybe get it polished, get stock and slightly undersized bearing sets and open the clearance up to .0025 and send it

Just so I know for next go around. How do you know from those pictures it Date? The discoloration of the bearing in one spot on each?

Yeah. The spots show that it sat for awhile. Mine looked like that. Sat in a buddy's garage for 7 years.

yep, cold starts on a crank sitting on bearings, because it sat long enough to push the oil out from between bearing/journal. it's not a big deal really. just check the crank journals for runout, get new bearings, mahle stock replacement rings if bores look ok, and put it back together.

stock lt1 rebuild le2 heads cam all the cheap bolt ons. doing what I just told you above to do. used king si std and .0005 under main bearings and king si std/.0005 rod bearings, clevite cam bearings, new obd1 timing chain, and cloyes oversized sprocket. I had the block ball honed to 600 for new mahle stock replacement rings. 383whp/373wtq for a budget.
