View Full Version : Clutch or Tranny?

I had my Camaro about two months and it has around 130,000 miles on it when I lost third gear. It will go in if you really slam it. Otherwise when you put it in third the shifter slides right in but when you let the clutch out it grinds and pops out. Like I said if you really hammer it in gear and hold the shifter it will go in. Once in a while I get the same problem with 4th but it comes and goes and usually goes in with out a problem. Do I need to rebuild the trans or do I have a clutch problem? Thanks in advance.

Does it have a aftermarket shifter with the adjustable stops? If not...It's a syncro.

its the trans, mine did this in 2nd when I broke the 1-2 slider, you probably bent the shift fork

My guess is syncro's or shift fork. it's hard to diagnose a transmission over the net though. Will it go into third and fourth fine with the motor off? All the other gears are perfectly normal?

I'd say tranny. 3rd seems to always be the first gear to go (bent fork or synchro). If it was the clutch it would do that in all gears.

Probably a bent shift fork. If the synchros were out it wouldn't let the car roll into third gear (been there with 5th before).

Def sounds like the infamous bent shift fork to me.

1-2 are the same slider assy, 3-4 likewise and 5-6 the same.so if you have problems in one gearset likelyhood is the other gear is gonna have probs too. but to me sounds more like a slider/syncro worn/broken

How the hell do you bend a shift fork like that? Slamming gears I guess or just high mileage wear and tear? I'm looking for a used T56 for my car I guess this is definately something I should look out for.
